Frequently Asked Questions
We’ve compiled answers to some of the most frequently asked questions to help you learn more about our services, approach, and what to expect from therapy.
What is Occupational Therapy for children?
Occupational therapy helps children build the skills they need to take part in everyday life; from getting dressed and using cutlery, to managing emotions, playing with others, and feeling confident at school.
How do I know if my child needs OT?
If your child is finding everyday tasks difficult; like handwriting, coordination, managing emotions, or coping with sensory input. An OT assessment can help identify how to support them.
What ages do you work with?
We support children and young people from usually 4 years old through to secondary school age, depending on their needs.

What happens in an assessment?
It depends on the needs of your child. Our aim is to make the assessment feel as natural and relaxed as possible.
Assessments are always individualised and may include a mix of movement based activities, tabletop tasks, and playful observation. We’ll also talk with you and educational staff to gather background information.
Where do sessions take place?
Assessments and therapy sessions are usually held in your child’s educational setting or at home; whichever setting works best for them and is suitable to carry out activities safely.

What kinds of things do you work on in therapy sessions?
Therapy is fun, play based, and completely individualised. Sessions may focus on sensory processing and regulation, emotional wellbeing and interoceptive awareness, fine and gross motor development, functional life skills (e.g. dressing, eating, independence), confidence, play, and social interaction

Can I come to the therapy sessions with my child?
Yes; you are welcome to attend. We just ask that you observe quietly or take part when invited, so your child can stay focused and get the most out of their time.

How often are the sessions, and how long do they last?
Most sessions last around 45 minutes. The number and frequency of sessions depends on your child’s needs and what we’re working on. We’ll discuss this together and agree on a plan that works for you.
How do you involve families and educational settings?
We believe therapy works best when everyone is working together. We keep communication open with families and educational staff, involving you in goal setting and strategies that help your child flourish in their daily life.
Are you qualified and registered?
Yes; I’m HCPC registered and a member of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT). I’ve completed postgraduate training in Ayres Sensory Integration and regularly take part in supervision and ongoing professional development.
